Hiring an AI visibility consultant

This is a category about eighteen months old with no qualifications, no established benchmarks and no track records longer than the category itself. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to know exactly what you are buying before you pay for it.

An AI visibility consultant makes a business more likely to be named when AI answers a buying question. The work splits into three parts: a technical pass on crawler access, rendering, schema and identity, which is days of work; a content pass restructuring pages to answer real buyer questions quotably; and off-site work earning mentions on the third-party pages engines cite, which is roughly 85% of the weight and takes months. Anyone quoting you a fixed timeline to a specific score is guessing.

The question that sorts the market

Ask any consultant in this space: what is your own AI visibility score, and what is the date you measured it?

Everyone selling this can measure themselves in about a minute. A consultant who cannot give you a number, or gives you one with no date, or has never run the measurement on their own business, is telling you something useful. This single question sorts the market faster than any credential, because there are no credentials.

Ours is readiness 100, taken there from 0, and every measurement since is published daily at our live score history. We publish every measurement because a number you can see beats a number you have to take on faith, and because it demonstrates the exact mechanism we would be explaining to you: on-site work moved our readiness to a perfect score and did nothing at all to our outcome score, which is what off-site presence is for.

What the work actually consists of

Three streams, running on very different clocks. A proposal that does not separate them is hiding the slow part.

  1. Technical, days. Confirm AI crawlers get a 200 rather than a 403, fix robots.txt rules nobody chose, make content readable without JavaScript, add Organization and FAQ schema, publish an llms.txt, align your name and description across every listing. Fast, cheap, and occasionally the whole problem: a blocked crawler is a zero regardless of everything else.
  2. Content, weeks. Find the questions buyers actually ask in your category, then build or rewrite pages that answer each one directly and near the top. This is where most of the visible effort goes and it is genuinely useful, but it is capped by the third stream.
  3. Off-site, months. Roughly 85% of the sources engines cite are third-party pages. Getting into the roundups, directories, review sites and trade press that an engine already cites for your category is the heaviest lever and the slowest one. It cannot be bought in a week and anyone implying otherwise is selling something else.

What a fair engagement looks like

Consultant, agency or platform

Three different purchases, often sold as one. Most of this market sells monitoring: a subscription that asks engines a set of questions on a schedule and draws you a chart. Monitoring is useful and it is not the work. A dashboard has never fixed anything, in the same way that owning scales has never made anyone lighter.

A consultant should be doing the work or directing it. If the deliverable is a report and an invoice, you have bought measurement at consultant prices. We have set the market out honestly, including where competitors beat us, at AI visibility audit companies and compared the tools at best AI visibility tools.

What it should cost

There is no established rate card in a category this young, so treat any figure, including ours, as orientation rather than a benchmark. What is reasonable to expect: a technical audit and fix priced as a fixed piece of work rather than a retainer, because it is a fixed piece of work; and ongoing work priced monthly, because the off-site half only makes sense over months.

Be wary of hourly pricing here. It rewards the slow version of a job whose valuable part is knowing which three things to do.

Before you hire anyone

Run the measurement yourself first. It is free, it takes about a minute, and walking into the conversation with your own baseline changes it completely: you can ask a consultant to explain your specific failures rather than listen to a general pitch. The manual version is the 12-check list, and the full method is at how to improve your AI search visibility.

Questions, answered

What does an AI visibility consultant do?

They make a business more likely to be named when an AI engine answers a buying question in its category. The work has three parts on different timescales: a technical pass on crawler access, rendering, schema and identity, which takes days; a content pass restructuring pages to answer real buyer questions directly, which takes weeks; and off-site work earning mentions on third-party pages that engines cite, which carries most of the weight and takes months.

How much does an AI visibility consultant cost?

There is no established rate card yet, so any figure quoted firmly is orientation rather than a benchmark. What is reasonable to expect is a technical audit and fix priced as a fixed piece of work, and ongoing off-site work priced monthly, because it only makes sense over months. Be cautious about hourly pricing in this category, since it rewards the slow version of a job whose value is knowing which few things to do.

How do I know if an AI visibility consultant is any good?

Ask what their own AI visibility score is and the date they measured it. Everyone selling this can measure themselves in about a minute, so an answer that is missing, undated, or has never been run is informative. There are no qualifications in this category and no track records longer than the category itself, which makes their own published number the closest thing to evidence available.

Should I hire a consultant or buy an AI visibility tool?

They solve different problems. A tool measures: it asks engines questions on a schedule and charts how often you are mentioned. A consultant changes the answer. Measurement is useful and it is not the work, so buying a monitoring subscription and expecting your visibility to improve is the common mistake in this market. If you only have budget for one, get a free baseline measurement first and spend the money on the work.

Can a consultant guarantee my business appears in ChatGPT?

No, and a guarantee should be treated as a warning. Nobody controls what an AI engine says, answers vary between runs and between engines, and roughly 85% of what an engine cites is material published by other people. A consultant can improve your odds substantially and can guarantee specific work, not a specific answer.
