How to get mentioned in AI answers

You can do everything right on your own site and still not be recommended. This is the step that changes that, and it is the only one that does not happen on your own website.

To get mentioned in AI answers, earn references on the third-party pages engines already cite: the comparison and best-of roundups that come up for your buyer questions, genuine answers on Reddit, directory and industry listings, and original data worth quoting. Around 85% of the sources AI engines cite are third-party pages rather than the brand's own site, so this is the ceiling on everything you do at home.

This is step 4 of how to improve your AI search visibility, and the one that moves the number most.

Why your own website has a ceiling

An engine deciding who to recommend is weighing what the web says about you, not what you say about yourself. Around 85% of the sources cited in AI answers are third-party pages. Your site can make you eligible. Other people's pages make you recommended.

This is also why the work takes months rather than weeks. You are waiting on other people to publish things, and there is no setting that speeds that up.

Find the pages that are already being cited

Do not guess at targets. Ask an engine your own buyer questions and look at what it cites. Those specific pages are the ones influencing the answer in your category, and they are a finite list you can work through.

  1. Write down the five or six questions a buyer would type before choosing someone like you.
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. Perplexity shows sources most openly, so start there.
  3. Record every source cited, and note which of them mention you already.

That list is your target list, ranked by how often each source appears. It is more useful than any generic outreach list because it is drawn from the answers you are actually trying to change.

Getting into roundups

The "best X" and comparison pages are the highest-value targets, because they exist to be quoted and engines lean on them heavily.

What works: a short, specific, human message to whoever wrote it. Say what you do in one line, why you fit the specific list, and give them a link they can check in thirty seconds. What does not work: a template, flattery about their "amazing article", or a request to be added without a reason.

Be realistic. Most will not reply. A few will, and one inclusion in a page engines cite is worth more than fifty links from places nobody reads.

Reddit, without getting banned

Reddit is consistently the single most-cited domain in AI answers, which makes it the most valuable and the most dangerous place on this list. Communities are extremely good at spotting marketing, and a ban removes the account and the comments together.

The only approach that works is genuinely helping.

Listings and entities

Unglamorous, durable and largely one-time work. Industry directories and associations, your local chamber, Crunchbase, Wikidata, and any "software for X" or "suppliers of Y" list your category has. These matter less individually than a roundup, but they are consistent signals that your business exists and belongs in a category.

Keep your name, description and location identical everywhere. Inconsistent details make entity resolution harder, which is the opposite of what you are trying to do.

Partner and affiliate programmes

Everything above is something you ask someone for, once, and then ask again next quarter. A partner or affiliate programme is the one route on this page that changes that, because it gives other sites a commercial reason to write about you. The mentions keep arriving after you stop chasing them.

What it produces is exactly the layer engines read: comparison pages, "best tools for X" roundups, review sites, and creator content that names you next to your competitors. Those pages already rank and are already cited, and a partner has a reason to keep theirs current that a journalist does not.

The honest limit is that affiliate content skews promotional and an engine can tell. A thin page that exists only to earn a commission is weak evidence and will be treated as such. What counts is partners with their own audience and their own editorial standards, which is a programme design problem rather than a volume problem. Agencies that build them properly, like Hamster Garage, are worth talking to before you launch one yourself.

Publish something worth citing

The most durable version of this is to become a source rather than chase them. Original data beats opinion every time, because opinion is abundant and numbers are not.

You almost certainly have data nobody else has: what you see across your customers, how often a particular problem shows up, what a job actually costs and how that has changed. Publish it honestly, with the method described, and it becomes the thing other pages cite. That is the one asset in this whole discipline that compounds.

What to expect

Months, not weeks, and progress that is invisible at first. The order it usually arrives in: your name starts appearing in an engine's cited sources, then in answers to narrow questions, then in the broad ones. If you are only watching the headline score you will conclude nothing is happening while all of that is underway.

We are running this on ourselves and publishing the result daily on our proof page, including the long stretch where the number has not moved. It is a slow lever. It is also the real one.

Questions, answered

How do I get my business mentioned in AI answers?

Earn references on the third-party pages engines already cite. Ask an engine your own buyer questions, record every source it cites, and work through that list: comparison and best-of roundups, genuine Reddit answers, directory and industry listings, and original data worth quoting. Around 85% of cited sources are third-party pages rather than your own site.

Does Reddit help with AI visibility?

Reddit is consistently the single most-cited domain in AI answers, so it is valuable, and it is also where self-promotion gets punished hardest. Read each subreddit's rules, participate genuinely before posting anything of your own, answer questions fully in the comment itself, disclose when something is yours, and never automate it across multiple accounts.

Do I need backlinks for AI search visibility?

Mentions matter even without a link. An engine reading your brand name alongside your category on a page it trusts takes that as a signal whether or not there is an anchor tag. Links still help for classic search, so they are worth having, but chasing links while ignoring unlinked mentions misses much of the value.

How long does it take to get mentioned in AI answers?

Months rather than weeks, because it depends on other people publishing things. Progress usually arrives in a specific order: your name appears in an engine's cited sources, then in answers to narrow questions, then in broad ones. Watching only the headline score makes it look like nothing is happening while all of that is underway.
