How to write content AI will quote
An answer engine is not ranking your page, it is looking for a passage it can lift and stand behind. Most marketing copy cannot be lifted at all, because it was written to sound impressive rather than to be extracted.
This is step 2 of how to improve your AI search visibility. Do step 1 first, because none of this reaches an engine that cannot read your page.
Why most pages cannot be quoted
Read a typical services page and try to find one paragraph that answers a question completely on its own. There usually is not one. The information is spread across three sections, hedged, and full of references to things mentioned earlier. A human reading top to bottom copes fine. An engine looking for a self-contained answer finds nothing it can safely use, so it quotes a competitor who wrote one.
Being quotable is not about writing more. It is about writing passages that survive being removed from the page.
1. Ask the question your buyer asks, in their words
Headings like "Our Approach" and "Why Choose Us" match nothing, because nobody types them. The heading that gets matched is the one that is already the question.
- Not "Pricing" but "How much does an AI visibility audit cost?"
- Not "Our Process" but "How long does it take to see results?"
- Not "Coverage" but "Do you work with businesses outside the UK?"
Use their words, not your internal vocabulary. If customers say "getting found on ChatGPT" and you say "answer engine optimisation", write the heading their way and define your term underneath.
2. Answer it immediately, in 40 to 60 words
Directly under the heading, before any context or story, give the complete answer. It should make sense if someone reads only that paragraph, with no preamble and no "as mentioned above".
Weak, because it cannot stand alone:
We offer a range of flexible pricing options tailored to your needs. Get in touch to discuss which package works best for your business.
Strong, because it can:
A full AI visibility report from ShowUp Labs costs 39 pounds and arrives within 24 hours. It lists every failed check on your site with the exact fix, in the order that moves the score fastest. The initial scan is free and takes about a minute.
The second one contains a price, a timeframe and what you get. An engine can quote it whole and be correct. That is the entire test.
3. Put real numbers in
Specific figures read as verifiable, and the research says they get cited more: adding concrete statistics lifted visibility by up to 30% in the Princeton, Georgia Tech and Allen Institute study.
Most businesses believe they have no statistics. They usually do:
- Your own operating numbers. Years trading, jobs completed, typical turnaround, response time.
- Results you can stand behind, with the caveats included. A range beats a best case.
- Published industry figures, cited to the source rather than repeated as folklore.
One rule, and it is the one that matters most: never invent a number. An engine that quotes a figure you made up has published it under your name, and you cannot take it back. In a business built on trust that is not a small error, it is the whole thing.
4. Quote someone by name
Quotations from named sources produced the single largest lift in the same study, up to 41%. A quotation gives an engine something attributable, which is exactly what it wants when deciding whether to repeat a claim.
You do not need a famous name. A customer sentence, a supplier's explanation, or a line from published research all work, as long as the source is named. Ask a happy customer for one sentence about the specific thing that mattered to them and you will get something better than anything you would write yourself.
Be specific about who and where
"We serve businesses nationwide" matches no question anyone asks. "We fit boilers in Leeds and Bradford" matches a real query, because people ask for what they need where they are. Vagueness feels safe and costs you every location and speciality you did not name.
Structure it so a machine can take it apart
Lists and tables are extracted more reliably than the same information buried in prose. If you are describing options, comparisons or steps, use the structure that matches. Keep paragraphs short. One idea each.

Questions, answered
How do I write content that AI will quote?
Use the buyer's real question as a heading, then answer it immediately underneath in 40 to 60 self-contained words that make sense with the rest of the page removed. Add concrete statistics and a quotation from a named source. Research from Princeton, Georgia Tech and the Allen Institute for AI found quotations lifted visibility by up to 41% and statistics by up to 30%.
What is an answer capsule?
A short self-contained paragraph, roughly 40 to 60 words, placed directly under a question-phrased heading. It answers the question completely with no preamble and no references to earlier parts of the page, so an answer engine can lift it whole and still be correct.
Do question-phrased headings really help AI visibility?
They help an engine match a user's question to your page, because the page literally contains the question in the words people use. Pair the heading with a self-contained answer underneath. A question heading followed by three paragraphs of context gives the engine nothing clean to take.
What if my business has no statistics to cite?
Most businesses have more than they think: years trading, jobs completed, typical turnaround, response times, and results you can stand behind with the caveats included. Published industry figures work too if you cite the source. Never invent a number, because an engine that quotes a false figure has published it under your name.
